What is NEM in Sarawak?
Net Energy Metering (NEM) is an initiative that enables homeowners with rooftop solar panels to receive credit for the surplus electricity they generate. For example, homeowners who have solar panels installed on their rooftops often generate more electricity than they consume during daylight hours. NEM ensures that this excess power is not wasted, but rather, fed back into the electric grid. In return, the homeowner receives credits for the electricity contributed. These credits can be utilised to offset electricity usage during nighttime or periods when the solar panels are not producing as much electricity.

The introduction of the NEM scheme in Sarawak aims to promote the adoption of renewable energy and encourage energy conservation among consumers. By enabling solar PV system owners to offset their electricity consumption through earned credits, NEM incentivises the implementation of sustainable energy practices, resulting in a greener and more environmentally conscious energy landscape.

On 20 September 2025, Sarawak Energy will roll out a subsidy of up to RM12,000 for domestic customers installing rooftop solar under NEM, starting 2026.

What is SELCO in Sabah?
The Self-Consumption (SELCO) scheme is Sabah’s renewable energy framework that allows homeowners and businesses to generate and use their own solar power directly on-site. Unlike Net Energy Metering (NEM) in Sarawak, SELCO does not export excess energy back to the grid. Instead, solar power generated is consumed instantly within the premises, reducing reliance on the grid and lowering electricity bills.

SELCO is useful in Sabah due to frequent blackouts, scheduled and unscheduled power cuts. But paired with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), SELCO goes a step further — transforming solar into a round-the-clock, resilient energy solution. Adding battery storage can help reduce wastage, maximise self-consumption, and ensure uninterrupted power supply.

WHY PAIR SELCO WITH BESS IN SABAH?
Curious about NEM in Sarawak? Our experts guide you through the whole process:

Energy Independence
Solar energy is stored during the day and used at night or whenever the grid is unstable.

Blackout Protection
With BESS, households have backup power during blackouts or power cuts.

Flexible Options
Choose a solar + battery package or a battery-only solution that stores grid electricity for emergency use.

Long-Term Savings
Use your own solar-generated electricity to save on monthly energy bills.
