In line with the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), the Sarawak government is stepping up efforts to increase renewable energy adoption and make solar power more accessible for homeowners. The Net Energy Metering (NEM) programme already enables households to export excess solar energy back to the grid to offset their electricity bills. From 2026, Sarawak Energy will also introduce a subsidy of up to RM12,000 for residential solar systems applying under NEM. If you're a Sarawak resident considering solar, this guide breaks down what the NEM subsidy is, how it works, and how you can claim it.

Hornbill Solar is Borneo's neighbourhood solar partner. Backed by Progressture Solar, we offer comprehensive clean energy solutions that are accessible and beneficial to all. Based on our experience of East Malaysia's renewable energy sector, here's your guide to Sarawak Energy's new rooftop solar subsidy.

What is the Net Energy Metering (NEM) Subsidy?

On 20 September 2025, Sarawak Energy introduced a Net Energy Metering (NEM) subsidy for domestic customers, starting in 2026 [1]. This incentive helps homeowners reduce the upfront cost of installing rooftop solar systems.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • RM12,000 subsidy for systems above 6 to 50kWac

  • RM10,000 subsidy for systems 3.5 to 6kWac

  • RM8,000 subsidy for systems 2 to 3.5kWac

The subsidy applies to successful installations from 2026. However, homeowners who sign their NEM contracts in 2025 may still submit claims through SESCO, with payouts starting in January 2026 (if approved).

It’s a first-come, first-served programme with quotas in place, so acting early matters.

What is NEM?

The Net Energy Metering (NEM) programme lets homeowners in Sarawak generate solar energy, use it to power their homes, and export any unused electricity back to the grid for bill credits.

Here's how NEM works:

  • Your home uses the solar energy you generate first.

  • Any excess is exported to the grid.

  • At the end of each billing cycle, your exported energy is deducted from your bill.

This makes NEM one of the most cost-effective options for households. Unlike Sabah’s Self-Consumption (SELCO) scheme, where solar must be consumed immediately, NEM ensures every unit of solar you produce brings financial value — even the surplus.

Why is the Subsidy Beneficial for Sarawak Homeowners?

Lower upfront costs

With subsidies of up to RM12,000, solar is now more affordable than ever for landed homeowners.

Faster payback

Lower starting costs plus bill credits from NEM means you enjoy real savings sooner.

Government-backed support

The programme aligns with the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P) and ensures homeowners are part of the state’s renewable future.
